We’ve seen blue-based control decks around the fringes of this Standard format for a while. More frequently than not, it has been Jeskai Control that occupies that niche in the format. However, U/B Control is staking its claim as a viable option in Standard. At the beginning of the format, Zack Kanner wrote an article here on Spellsnare.com (which you can find here) where he lays out and analyzes his build of U/B Control. This list, piloted by thinenagooyen on MtGO on January 1 is similar to Zack’s list, but with the inclusion of the powerful enchantment Metallurgic Summonings as a win condition. It’s important to note that even though Metallurgic Summonings has an activated ability on it, it can only be activated in this deck mainboard through a combination of Summonings’ activated ability (which creates artifacts), Confirm Suspicions, and some number of Torrential Gearhulk. Postboard, Dynavolt Tower adds 3 more artifacts into the deck that can activate Summonings. The main use of the powerful enchantment is to clog the board up to stop attacks, and eventually win the game when U/B Control has turned the corner. It’s also important to note that the best enchantment removal in the format, Fragmentize, does not hit Metallurgic Summonings.

Control in this format is geared very well to beat Aetherwork Marvel, as Marvel only has several important spells in its deck that will help them win the game. Additionally, the glut of removal and counter spells make U/B Control a very good option against Vehicles and B/G Delirium variants.

Moving forward, I think that U/B Control could see a big rise in playability. The format appears to be shifting towards an area that control decks will feel benefit them. This list specifically has a lot of good things going for it, but I feel that some cards can be cut or moved around, namely moving Transgress the Mind to the sideboard and cutting Contraband Kingpin entirely. Here are the changes I would make:

-3 Transgress the Mind

+1 Negate

+1 Anticipate

+1 Murder

-3 Contraband Kingpin

+3 Transgress the Mind
