Frequently in Modern (or life, for that matter), the fine line between brilliance and utter chaos is walked when someone says, “what’s good? Ok, let’s do ALL of that.” Inquisition of Kozilek is a good card in Modern, where most important cards cost 3 or less, so why don’t we just play as many discard spells as we reasonably can? 8 Rack was born out of this madness, and has been everyone’s favorite not-totally-viable deck since. It’s popped up here and there in the hands of some notable players like Tom Ross.

The power of the deck comes from its combination of powerful board control with cards like Smallpox, Liliana of the Veil, and Dismember, and powerful discard spells like Wrench Mind, Thoughtseize, and Inquisition of Kozilek. The choke hold that this deck provides is consistent discard every turn, effectively making every one of their draws a topdeck that must be played immediately or discarded. Liliana of the Veil is the real star of the show in those situations. Once the opponent is more or less locked out of the game, Shrieking Affliction and The Rack close the game out quickly. Mutavault specifically is excellent in this deck, as it provides a creature that avoids Smallpox, can cut several turns off of the clock, and (obviously) taps for mana.

This deck’s matchups are incredibly polarizing. Some matchups, like Jund, are excellent, as 8 Rack naturally strands much of Jund’s removal, and can deal with its creatures very easily. On the other hand, decks that move quickly and lay their hands on the table quickly, like Affinity, run over 8 Rack easily, as discard spells and targeted removal spells can only do so much when the opponent only has 2 cards in hand and 5 creatures on the field. It also punishes you for not knowing the deck well, but will absolutely reward you for precise play. If you’re looking for a deck that’s fun, unique, and given the right matchups can steamroll a tournament, I highly recommend this deck.

Here are the changes I would make going forward:

-2 Funeral Charm

+1 Wrench Mind

+1 Blackmail

-1 Surgical Extraction

-1 Night of Souls’ Betrayal

+2 Liliana, the Last Hope
