In Legacy, there’s always been room in the metagame for decks focused on disrupting the opponent. One of these such decks is Pox, which aims to disrupt and shred the opponent’s manabase and hand while keeping the board contained. This will eventually lead to an insurmountable deficit for the opponent. Let’s jump in and hope we don’t contract something.
Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, and Hymn to Tourach are the discard spells in this deck. The one mana discard spells are important as they allow for a meaningful turn 1 in this deck, despite it wanting to play the long game. Hymn to Tourach, on the other hand, is a card advantage spell that has varying levels of power. It sometimes wins the game on its own when it’s cast, but it can also be a meaningless spell or even help the opponent.
Sinkhole, alongside Wasteland and Crucible of Worlds make up the land destruction portion of this deck. Legacy tends to be a format where mana efficiency is at a premium. Because of this, land destruction is very impactful. The combo of Wasteland and Crucible of Worlds is also great in this deck, as it allows you to put some of the format’s decks in a chokehold that eventually puts them fully out of the game.
To supplement both of these elements, the deck’s namesake card is used. Smallpox is fantastic at doing a little bit of just about everything. When combined with the other, more impactful cards in this deck, the opponent’s strategy can be meaningfully disrupted in a number of ways. Another important supplemental card is Liliana of the Veil. The 3 mana planeswalker is great at taxing combo decks’ hands as well as controlling the opponent’s board.
In the sideboard, Ensnaring Bridge, Leyline of the Void, and Nether Void are all excellent disruption cards targeting Sneak & Show, Dredge, and Storm respectively. In addition, Collective Brutality helps massively against Burn, Toxic Deluge controls board flood decks like Elves, and Pithing Needle and Ratchet Bomb are impactful catch-alls that are situationally very strong against a variety of strategies.
Here are the changes I would make going forward:
+1 Fatal Push
-2 Ratchet Bomb
+1 Toxic Deluge
