Summary

Modern’s control decks are all unique, and this deck is perhaps the most unique of the lot. U/B Tezzerator uses artifact synergies and Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas to disrupt the opponent for as long as possible until the deck’s powerful late game takes over. This deck has several unique and interesting cards that are hardly seen outside of this deck, making it one of Modern’s truly unique decks.

For additional mana, Dimir Signet and Mox Opal are used to accelerate the deck’s progression. Frequently, additional mana sources in control decks are less than effective, due to their ineffectiveness in the late game. With this deck, however, Ensoul Artifact and Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas allow the useless late game mana to turn into powerful attackers that end up winning the game.

Chalice of the Void, Pithing Needle, and Ratchet Bomb all offer some disruption through artifacts, which similarly can be turned into meaningful attackers with Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas in the late game. Chalice of the Void is slightly less meaningful in Modern than Legacy, but it still offers powerful disruption that has the possibility of winning the game singlehandedly in certain matchups.

Damnation is the best sweeper option available to this color combination in this format, so maximizing on those makes sense. Additionally, it avoids killing Darksteel Citadel if the land is enchanted with Ensoul Artifact or turned into a creature via Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas. Collective Brutality offers a versatile kill spell, discard spell, and life gain spell that takes advantage of some of the dead cards that you’ll be drawing later on in this deck. Consult the Necrosages is an interesting inclusion in this deck. Neither Divination or Mind Rot is good enough for a Modern deck, but the versatility offered by getting to chose one or the other makes it a valuable inclusion for this deck.

Of course, Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas is the glue that holds this deck together. The +1 ability offers a relatively unrivaled card advantage engine, while the -1 ability can turn the game on its head in an instant. Finally, the ultimate ability is generally enough to win the game on its own. Tezzeret is a must-answer for any and all opponent, and maximizing on how often you’ll draw them is critical.

Here are the changes I would make going forward:

Mainboard

-1 Precursor Golem

-1 Mishra’s Bauble

+1 Dimir Signet

+1 Wurmcoil Engine

Sideboard

-2 Quicksmith Rebel

-2 Pithing Needle

+2 Countersquall

+2 Wurmcoil Engine
