After Pro Tour Hour of Devastation, many players were concerned that control strategies were all but dead in Standard. However, results on MtGO have indicated that while the control decks that were brought to the Pro Tour might have been invalidated by Ramunap Red, but different styles of control have been cropping up, proving that the overarching strategy itself is alive and kicking.

Like most control decks, this deck is jam packed with removal spells. Collective Brutality, Doomfall, Never // Return, Blessed Alliance, Fatal Push, Grasp of Darkness, and Cast Out make up the massive removal package in this deck. Fatal Push and Grasp of Darkness seem to be the go-to options in this deck, while Blessed Alliance can be a much more flexible, yet situational card. Collective Brutality has great applications against Ramunap Red and control decks alike, while Cast Out mops up anything that sneaks through the cracks.

Descend upon the Sinful, Fumigate, and Quarantine Field make up the board wipes (or pseudo board wipes) in this deck. Descend upon the Sinful is the more expensive of the 2 Wrath effects, and it doesn’t gain life, but it importantly exiles creatures, something that have been a lacking feature of board wipes and an effect that is particularly relevant in this metagame. Quarantine Field isn’t quite a board wipe, and it is usually quite mana intensive, but it has the impressive power to wipe the entirety of the opponent’s board with just one card.

This deck has several powerful card advantage engines. Gideon, Ally of Zendikar floods the board with tokens quickly, while Ob Nixilis Reignited and Sorin, Grim Nemesis both sit on the board and kill creatures while drawing cards and threatening a game-ending ultimate ability. This deck also plays 3 copies of Painful Truths. While this is a 2 color deck, it plays come blue lands (and an Island in the board) in order to maximize Truths’ card drawing abilities. Lastly, Linvala, the Preserver (usually) offers 8 power worth of flying and 5 life for just 6 mana, frequently turning the game around immediately.

Here are the changes I would make going forward:

-2 Doomfall

+1 Cast Out

+1 Descend upon the Sinful

No changes.
